Questions
Most do, because the neutral keeps the switch's radio powered while the light is off, but Leviton and Lutron both make models that work without one. Lutron lists its Caseta Original and Diva smart dimmers as needing no neutral. Leviton's no-neutral Decora Smart switches need a ground wire and a separate Wi-Fi bridge instead.

Many homes were wired before the 2011 National Electrical Code began requiring a neutral at most switch boxes, so older boxes often have only the switch wires. Leviton says a neutral is usually a bundle of two or more white wires at the back of the box. The code still allows a replacement switch without a neutral where one cannot be run without opening finished walls.
